Hardness determines how hard it is to dig out a tile and how much the tile can withstand pressure primarily from Liquids.
Especially Tiles out of Sandstone are unsuitable to hold large amounts of water.
Very Firm materials like Granite require skilled dupes to be mined. Nearly Impenetrable materials like Abyssalite need even further training.
