Preamble
For more than a year now, the necessity of leaving the platform the Wiki currently resides at (Fandom) and alternative options have been recurrent topics within the editor community. Those in favor of the change say, that Fandom serves a large number of irrelevant ads to readers. That its sole mission of making profit is incompatible with the Wiki's mission of forming a community around a shared interest and donating our time and effort for the benefit of others. That the standardization of Fandom's sites, its distasteful attempts at AI generated clickbait point to a future where the value provided by the wiki will decline, while the prospect of moving is unlikely to get less daunting than it is now. (Apparently you cannot link to wiki[dot]gg, so I'll not even attempt to.)
On the other hand, the service that Fandom does provide is highly reliable.
The Chinese sisterwiki community (the largest by far) has decided that it'll not move at the same time that this wiki does (if it does), though it'll consider moving after. Connections to Fandom from China have a high latency.
The Don't Starve Wiki has moved to dontstarve[dot]wiki[dot]gg in August.

Issue 1: Platform
Option A: Status quo
The site will continue to exist on Fandom and we will continue improving it as best we can.

Oppose • While I appreciate the mobile phone support that Fandom provides, the dense nature of its webpages (including both its UI and ads) makes it less accessible to users with low data/slow internet speed/lower-end computers, even while using an adblocker. I strongly believe that accessibility should be prioritized when hosting any kind of documentation. SquidCakes (talk) 18:53, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Option B: Miraheze/Wikitide
Miraheze is a UK based non-profit ran by volunteers and supported by donors. Due to a disagreement about funding about six months ago some people split from Miraheze and formed Wikitide, which offers much the same services under a US based charity. They (the Wikitide people) also run Wikiforge, which is a paid service and helps support Wikitide. The funding of Wikitide is allegedly healthier than Miraheze's. Miraheze is merging back together with Wikitide under the US company. They serve no ads and would allow us to use our own domain. This service is free (for the Wiki), but history shows that uptime can be a bit spotty.
Some projects using them:
Farthest Frontier Wiki
Rosetta Code
The Sims Wiki
Amicitia Wiki

Support • While I recognize the shortcomings of Miraheze, it's easy for me to look them over, because they don't ask for a commitment. I also really agree with the spirit of what they're are doing. I see this as a path to independent hosting, where the incentives would really align with what the Wiki needs to thrive. KGello (talk) 16:23, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

I've found a status dashboard that is used by the site reliability engineers. [1][2]

Option C: Wikiforge
A paid service (15 USD/month) that should provide a more reliable service than Wikitide.

Oppose • The idea of moving to a subscription-based wiki sounds like it would provide a polished experience, but my main concern is that it would be financially isolating. There is no safety net if nobody within the ONI community is willing/able to fund it come many years from now. Considering the ONI community's comparatively small size to other games with large wikis, I especially fear the thought of this. SquidCakes (talk) 19:09, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Option D: wiki gg
A free service that does not allow the use of custom domains and is supported by ads.

Support • While I'm not knowledgeable regarding many technical weaknesses of an alternative wiki host, I do otherwise think that wiki gg would be a stable place to host the ONI Wiki. Wiki gg has a steady stream of (unobstructive) ad and partner revenue, and hosts a few large wikis already (including Terraria, Deep Rock Galactic, Dead Cells, and Ark: Survival Evolved). I can only imagine that it will grow even more stable with time. SquidCakes (talk) 18:53, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- wiki gg can support every function (or at least every major function) that we use on the wiki now. KGello (talk) 20:26, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Wiki gg is snappy, and moving there is easy. I'm very confident that it'll stay that way too well past a time when noone voting here cares about the game or the Wiki. I can still only half support it, because Gamepedia was that way too. Break the wheel, or something. But if we don't, that's fine too. KGello (talk) 16:23, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
Issue 2: Funding
Option A: Status quo
No money will be collected by the Wiki or by anyone in the Wiki's name. The Wiki will only rely on paid services if a donor offers to pay for them.

Oppose • I have no problem donating for this project, but I trust myself. I don't want it to live or die by the generosity/reliability of people who are not me. This setup seems like a good way to paint ourselves into a corner. KGello (talk) 16:37, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
Comments
Option B: No costs whatsoever
No money will be collected by the Wiki or by anyone in the Wiki's name. The Wiki will not rely on any paid service to operate. The oxygennotincluded.wiki domain will not be recognized as the Wiki's, because its owner is not financially beholden to the Wiki. Issue 1 options requiring funding will not be pursued.

Option C: Crowdfunding, OpenCollective
The Wiki will endeavor to find a financial host on opencollective.com and start soliciting donations and looking for partnerships to cover its costs.

Support • Like the paid host option, while unlikely, I'd like to see us try. Unlike individual benefactors, I have no reservations relying on a foundation to make payments on behalf of the Wiki, where all donations and expenses are clear and in the open. It'd also open the door to supporting ourselves with ads, should we want to do that. KGello (talk) 16:37, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Open Collective Europe would likely agree to be a financial host for the project, as long as it's not ad supported. KGello (talk) 20:32, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
