The Refrigerator is a structure that drastically increases the shelf-life of food by storing it at an ideal temperature, at the cost of electricity and heating the nearby environment.
Tips
- Storing food in powered Refrigerator will reduce amount of germs present on food.
- A Refrigerator is not a necessary item for all colonies, as food can be preserved in alternate ways. Any food that is stored in environments colder than 4°C is considered to be refrigerated. This means that putting a ration box in an Icy Biome is a cost effective way to store food. Storing items in sterile atmosphere also works. Placing a ration box in an oxygen-free environment will also stop food from rotting. Creating a room of Hydrogen, Chlorine, CO2 or other "sterile" gasses will have the same effect in preserving food.[1]
- Two Refrigerators occupy the same space as one Ration Box, but store more food and provide more decor. They do not need to be powered just to store food, only to cool it down below the temperature of the environment.
- Refrigerated items will still rot if the building is surrounded by Polluted Oxygen.
- Refrigerators can be wired in the same way as Smart Storage Bins.
Bugs
- Refrigerator doesn't need power to cool down the contents, only to prevent them from rotting. Cold items are inhospitable to Slimelung germs, but Slimelung is harmless when ingested, so there is no reason to remove it from food.
