Rooms are created by completely surrounding an area with tiles and doors. It can also include unmined minerals, metals, and sand as part of the surrounding structure, but not materials that disappear over time such as Bleach Stone or Oxylite.
Specialized Rooms give bonuses to Duplicants, and have specific requirements. The Room Overlay (default key: F11) shows which rooms are recognized, requirements for specific rooms, and what each "Miscellaneous" room could potentially become if the conditions are satisfied.
For example, a barracks is as simple as a cot enclosed in a room, size from 12 to 64 tiles, and no industrial machinery inside. Beds in a barracks will restore additional stamina for Duplicants when they sleep there.
